Including this quote shared by Zara:
"People are not trees, we were born to move."

Some further thoughts:

I think a global reassessment of the meaning of borders is overdue. It's obvious that they do not work very well to contain or to keep away. What if there were no border restrictions?

Even if there was an initial rapid exodus of people to the West, I think the knowledge that you could go home and come back whenever you want, without hassle, would have unexpected results. For example, I think more people would take the opportunity to invest (time and money) in their home countries, rather than think of that as something that they will do eventually. Because in reality, it's so easy to get caught up in the Western rat race and never actually achieve that goal.

I also think that the West may lose some of its lure if people could see what it's really all about. So rather than devote their lives to finding a way to get there, people might spend their time finding ways to create the lives they want, where they are.Kishawihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16418348924423211555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-2176392488500867882010-02-15T02:14:18.708-08:002010-02-15T02:14:18.708-08:00A great quote shared by somebody who commented on ...A great quote shared by somebody who commented on this post via facebook:

"Those who do not move, do not notice their chains." - Rosa Luxemburg

Thanks Elizabeth!Kishawihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16418348924423211555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-20706049828273513962009-12-14T07:55:27.430-08:002009-12-14T07:55:27.430-08:00Interesting story as for me. I like that concept of "never really working again" and being in one's element – that's definitely the aim!Kishawihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16418348924423211555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-36607040714371257612009-04-26T12:49:00.000-07:002009-04-26T12:49:00.000-07:00Excellent post, I've been reading Richard Sennet's...Excellent post, I've been reading Richard Sennet's The Craftsman. In it he talks about how craftspeople's homes would also be a kind of open workshop. Interesting concept when you look at the modern day version - these depressing work/live units that are really just living around working rather than working around living.

I feel there's this constant emphasis in the West on what we do rather than who we are. I think passionate, committed people who find a way to make a difference through what they love break those boundaries, as who they are becomes what they do. See Ken Robinson's The Element, in a nutshell he describes such people as being "in their element" and these people "never really work again" because their work isn't just something they "do".Emily Wilkinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02638202405827158970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-79532557064199349422009-03-22T17:03:00.000-07:002009-03-22T17:03:00.000-07:00Thanks JJ. There are some things that I may not have significant control over (e.g. the fact that I live in a world dominated by particular unjust economic practices that I still must engage with at some level) and then there are some choices I have made on my journey in search of greater understanding of my purpose here (e.g. I choose to live here in the UK where I have better access to, for example, a wide variety of sources of information about Africa! Ironic, sad and true.) However, complicit as I am, I strive to keep my eyes open and make noise every opportunity that I can!Kishawihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16418348924423211555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-73102898170303369892009-03-17T12:47:00.000-07:002009-03-17T12:47:00.000-07:00True! So, is ignorance bliss?

It's almost as if we think cynicism is a sign of intelligence or sophistication when really it's just another excuse not to deal with things at all!

I mean and here we are this week celebrating St. Patrick's Day quite happily (is it because it's an excuse to drink beer? pure celebration that doesn't require having to think too much about anything serious? On that note however, a colleague of mine shared this: "Now Paddy’s main claim to fame is to have driven all the snakes out of Ireland. However, scientists ascertain there have been no actual snakes in Ireland since the Ice Age. But, one of the symbols of the Druids was a snake (symbol of the Devil in Christianity of course). So when tales tell St Patrick drove them out, this is actually a metaphor for the destruction of the ancient pagan traditions.")

And on that note, next year, i'm going to try and convince as many people as i know, on a personal level but in a very visual way, to celebrate the event.Kishawihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16418348924423211555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-24385142450223855082009-03-10T13:41:00.000-07:002009-03-10T13:41:00.000-07:00i agree: when i used to live in Milan, I was alway...i agree: when i used to live in Milan, I was always pleased to see the way the day was celebrated by men buying yellow mimosas for women and women wearing them on their lapel.

maybe we are too cynical as a nation to celebrate? i.e. we question too much the reasons behind it rather than the beauty of the event.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-38902811955036851942009-03-02T13:21:00.000-08:002009-03-02T13:21:00.000-08:00Exactly! It's as if, only by going through that journey do you realise why it's not working and therefore realise what might.

Fear of failing can be so crippling! And it often feels like people would prefer to be crippled and safe than dance into the world of possibility.

Maybe that should be our design brief for life!

Thanks for reading
:)Kishawihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16418348924423211555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-1943817757908913592009-02-28T03:49:00.000-08:002009-02-28T03:49:00.000-08:00Hi LuluYes, definitively, you are a writer too! Yo...Hi Lulu

Yes, definitively, you are a writer too! You write from my heart.

I like to consider myself as a designer to. Fullstop. People then ask: What kind of designer? What's your speciality? I would like to say: "None. Everything. I can design anything you want me to find a solution for. Trust me, I can mashup all I've seen and experienced: I can make do with my knowledge and the media - no matter what. I'll try. And maybe I fail. So what?" But I don't because people won't believe me. Or wouldn't think my startegy is right.

Do you also feel like so many people are a little narrow minded? Well, I don't blame them. Maybe they need it to feel safe and right. But as a designer you understand that there is no safety and no singe one truth. We need to see the big picture. And that's not easy at all either! Though necessary in our flat world.

Keep the blogposts coming :)! I think a lot of us human beings do this all the time – largely, I think, because we see the moment's gratification as more important than its long term (not so gratifying) consequence. Sometimes, there’s the odd unexpected object, obviously foreign and out of place. Often there is the thing you saw that you shouldn’t have seen and so you choose to ‘unsee’ it"
You also say that you want the truth.
My 2 cents is that in whatever you are referring to in the phrase I quote, the truth was staring right at you, and you had the choice (that you say you would like)...and your choice was to ignore it...most likely at your own peril.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11361106.post-24124976234358212382008-05-21T15:20:00.000-07:002008-05-21T15:20:00.000-07:00so glad you are back.
