Daily Gospel

“We have to be part of the society which we are changing; we have to work from within it, and not try to descend like ancient gods, do something, and disappear again. A country, or a village, or a community, cannot be developed: it can only develop itself. For real development means the development, the growth, of people.”

It seems as though it is far too easy to retreat into our corners, congratulating ourselves on the occasions we step out to contribute. The problem with this, of course, is that in doing so we succeed only in tripping up the people who are busy engaging in life. I have been guilty too often of cheering (or complaining) from the side instead of participating in the comradery of Change.

Are the international development partners reading this?

Probably not! Brings me to the issue of "blame". We devote so much energy castigating others instead of taking responsibility for ourselves. Which I believe is the essence of the quote. Making ourselves victims is not constructive – embracing our realities, wrought with problems as they are and not waiting for those "gods" to descend and intervene, is more like it. Obviously there are (economic, political etc) limitations but these sholud not detract from our active participation. At the end of the day, it is only the person who feels the pain who can appreciate the urgency of addressing it.
